Drug Information

Drug Information is a four-week rotation following a general introduction and orientation to the drug information resources and processes.  The resident will be responsible for answering telephone inquiries, gathering information from the caller, researching the inquiry, and providing an answer to the requestor.  Other responsibilities include those as listed under resident learning activities.

Resident Learning Activities

  1. Explain and participate in the Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) process.
  2. Explain and participate in the Medication Occurrence (MO) process.
  3. Utilize MIDAS to analyze MO and ADR data.
  4. Understand root cause analyses (RCA) and failure mode and effect analyses (FMEA) and when each is used as a tool to analyze processes within the health system.
  5. Review and analyze medical literature for significance and accuracy through drug information inquiries, medication reviews, and journal club presentations.
  6. Explain the policy – procedure for drug recalls within the health system.
  7. Understand and explain the role of medication use evaluation (MUE) in medication safety.
  8. Explain the formulary process through participation in medication reviews/drug class reviews as requested by medical staff.
  9. Provide accurate drug information to health system staff as requested.
  10. Precept and serve as a role model for fourth year pharmacy students in Drug Information.
